Comparison
Should an MSP sell from ConnectWise PSA or add a separate CRM?
Sell from ConnectWise PSA if keeping sales and service in one system matters most and its opportunity, pipeline and forecasting tools cover how you sell. Add a sales CRM such as MADDOX beside it when you want recorded calls, coaching, objection tracking, campaigns and business-review preparation that a PSA is not built around.
This is not a like-for-like comparison, and it would be misleading to present it as one. ConnectWise PSA runs your service desk, time, billing, agreements and projects. MADDOX is not a PSA and does not try to be. The real question is about the sales side only: whether the CRM built into your PSA is enough, or whether your sellers need a dedicated tool alongside it.
ConnectWise PSA
What sales features does ConnectWise PSA include?
ConnectWise PSA includes CRM functionality: opportunity tracking and management, pipeline management with quota tracking and forecasting, activity logging, task scheduling and sales process automation. Its advantage is integration — opportunity data flows straight into agreements, projects and services in the same system.
One system for selling and delivering.
ConnectWise describes its PSA CRM as integrated with ticketing, projects, billing and service data. When an opportunity is won, the agreement and project can be created from it without re-keying, and service history is visible to whoever sells to the client next. That single source of truth is a real benefit, and many MSPs never need more.
Quoting and pricing.
Quotes and proposals are typically built in ConnectWise CPQ, formerly ConnectWise Sell, which integrates with the PSA, populates quotes with client details already in the PSA, and can place orders electronically with distributors. ConnectWise does not publish PSA pricing; it is quote-based.
MADDOX beside the PSA
What does MADDOX add on the sales side?
MADDOX adds the parts of selling a PSA is not designed around: recorded and transcribed calls, coaching and one-to-ones built on them, objections as tracked records, stage exit criteria, email campaigns and MSP campaign packs, and preparation for business reviews. Tickets, dispatch, time and billing stay in ConnectWise.
What the ConnectWise connector does today.
The ConnectWise connector is early access. It brings companies and their agreements into MADDOX: company name, website, phone, industry, type, annual revenue, employee count and address, and for each agreement its name, value, renewal date, term and status. The point is that sellers work from the client list you already service, with contract values and renewal dates attached.
Tickets, dispatch, time entry and billing do not cross and stay in the PSA. Autotask connects the same way, also early access. If you need a connector that is generally available today, ask us where it stands before you plan around it.
The selling layer.
On top of that client list, MADDOX runs the pipeline with stage exit criteria and tracked objections, a renewal pipeline with a monthly recurring revenue view, account health scores, and a QBR builder. Coaching comes from recorded calls. For assessment-led sales, the IT Audit add-on, switched off until enabled, scores an estate and builds the client deck; the add-on also includes a network scanner.
Side by side
How do MADDOX and ConnectWise PSA’s CRM compare?
ConnectWise PSA’s CRM wins on being inside the system that delivers the service. MADDOX wins on what happens during and around the sales conversation. Most MSPs that use both keep ConnectWise as the system of record for clients and service, and use MADDOX for selling.
| MADDOX | ConnectWise PSA (CRM) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A sales CRM; not a PSA | A PSA with CRM built in |
| Opportunities and pipeline | Pipelines with stage exit criteria and grades | Opportunity tracking, pipeline, quota tracking and forecasting |
| Won deal to delivery | Agreements come in from the PSA via the early-access connector | Opportunity flows into agreements, projects and services natively |
| Quoting | Quotes with price books, bundles and templates | ConnectWise CPQ (formerly Sell), with distributor ordering |
| Call recording and coaching | Recorded, transcribed calls; call grading; one-to-one prep | Not part of the PSA CRM as described on ConnectWise’s CRM page |
| Objection tracking | First-class objections feeding coaching | Not described on ConnectWise’s CRM page |
| Marketing campaigns | Email journeys and MSP campaign packs | Not described on ConnectWise’s CRM page |
| Ticketing, time, billing | No; stays in the PSA | Yes, the core of the product |
| Pricing | By invitation; no published prices | Quote-based |
The honest answer
When is ConnectWise PSA’s CRM enough?
When your sales motion is simple enough that opportunities, a pipeline and a forecast cover it, and one system matters more than sales depth. Owner-led MSPs that sell mostly by referral, with no dedicated sales team to coach, are often best served by keeping everything in ConnectWise.
Signs you should stay in the PSA.
Adding a second system has a cost: another login, another record to keep accurate, another place for data to drift. These are the cases where that cost is not worth paying.
- One or two people sell, and they are also delivering.
- Most new business comes from referrals rather than outbound calling or campaigns.
- Your quoting already lives in ConnectWise CPQ and works.
- You do not plan to coach sellers from recorded calls.
The other side
When should you add MADDOX beside ConnectWise?
When you have people whose job is selling and you want them coached from evidence; when you run outbound calling or campaigns; when renewals and business reviews need a sales owner; or when assessments are how you win. MADDOX takes the client list from ConnectWise and adds the selling layer on top.
Signs MADDOX belongs beside your PSA.
These are the cases where a dedicated sales CRM earns its place.
- You have BDRs, account executives or account managers whose calls should be graded and coached.
- You want to run outbound calling with scripts and objection handling.
- You want to convert break-fix clients systematically — see the break-fix conversion guide.
- You sell on assessments and want the deck built from the findings.
Day to day
How do MADDOX and ConnectWise PSA work together?
ConnectWise stays the record for clients, agreements and service. MADDOX holds the selling: leads, calls, coaching, deals, campaigns and business-review preparation. The early-access connector brings companies and agreements from ConnectWise into MADDOX, so sellers work from the client list you already service, with values and renewal dates attached.
A typical flow.
This is how an MSP running both usually divides the work. Nothing here requires changing how your service desk operates.
- Prospecting and discovery happen in MADDOX: calls recorded, objections tracked, the assessment scored if you use the IT Audit add-on.
- The agreement is set up in ConnectWise exactly as it is today, by whoever does that now.
- The connector brings the company and agreement back into MADDOX, with value, renewal date, term and status.
- Renewals and reviews are worked from MADDOX: the renewal pipeline, health scores and the QBR builder.
- Service — tickets, dispatch, time and billing — never leaves ConnectWise.
Questions to ask before relying on the connector.
Because the connector is early access, ask us directly how it will behave with your ConnectWise configuration: which agreement types you use, how often it runs, and what its run history shows when something fails to sync. You will get a straight answer, including a no where the answer is no.
